When I was a young boy I remember well participating in the Christmas Story each year, at school and in church plays.
It’s very sad that bit by bit we in our enlightenment have eliminated Christ from Christmas in fear of offending those of other faiths or those with none. In truth the Christmas story has something for everyone, it’s a story of love. Many of today’s children will never know of the beautiful Christmas play. How Jesus’ birth was both miraculous and ordinary. Wise men attend it, and also shepherds; a new star announces it, and yet it takes place in the lowliest of circumstances- in a manger with beasts of the field looking on. Gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh signify a royal birth, the coming of the Prince of the house of David; the homely greetings of shepherds welcome a friend of the poor, the lowly and the oppressed- a man for others.
When Jesus was born he introduced a light into our very deepest being, providing a vista of faith and hope, and offering a way of release from the servitude of the flesh and the fury of the will into what St. Paul called “the glorious liberty of the children of God”
If you can find the Christmas story play this season why not take it in.
